I doubt it'll have any impact on anything. How many people are downloading 2500 old day files? Giganews will probably delete one day of files for every day that passes so, they'll continue to have 2000+ days of files on hand. Many files are removed within 24 hours anyway because of the DMCA so for most people it's "get it now or never get it". How many torrents are still alive when they're 2500 days old? That's 6 years. My guess is not that many.
I kinda get the impression when we're talking "retention" we're not talking about the same thing. It just means they're going to start deleting the very oldest files. One day of old files deleted for each day that passes. Realistically Giga has been unreliable out beyond 1500 days for awhile now. Have you noticed?

Me, like many friends would stop using usenet altogether,
