I'm seeing this problem too, starting with 6.53RC3. My contribution to the discussion:
I'm running 6.53RC3 build 3305
System is W7-Pro 64
When I click ctrl-R on a small (non binary) post, it shows up in the Downloading Files tab for a short while
then disappears.
It does not show up in the Files List tab (I don't think it ever did in prior version, and don't think it should)
The text editor/viewer that used to start up to show the content of the file does not do that anymore.
I went searching, and found that the message header and body was actually being downloaded and placed
in C:\Users\my_name\AppData\Local\Newsbin\Read Posts
So for me, the post is downloaded, but not displayed.
I checked in Newsbin.nbi for DisplayReadPosts but there was no such entry.
For giggles, I exited Newsbin, and added DisplayReadPosts=1 to the settings section, after DisplayAge=60
I restarted Newsbin, but it still does not display the file.
So.... for now, I can keep the directory C:\Users\my_name\AppData\Local\Newsbin\Read Posts open
in an file explorer window, click ctrl-R in NB , then when file shows up, double click it in the explorer
window to read it.
