NewsbinDD, your router is almost certainly using an old version of SMB - probably v1.
There are lots (and lots) of improvements in the current version SMB3 - found in Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2. You can even do things like run a virtual machine directly from a hard-drive image via an SMB3 path with almost no performance hit.

Between two Windows 8.1 machines, SMB3 shares are almost indistinguishable from direct local drives.
