1 - "Search" set to "internet" doesn't search your downloaded headers. Instead it checks a server on the internet, like google and pulls down results that way. Essentially if you use search, you don't have to download headers ever.
2 - "Search" set to "local" will search your local header downloads.
3 - You can tell search to only look in certain groups. Both kinds of search. If you have your groups split into topics, you just have to pick the topic before you search. It's labeled "Search in Groups" in the current beta.
4 - How you format posters depends on whether you use internet or local mode. For local, you only need part of the "from" field.
Now what I've done is I use headers, I generated a "watch topic" and set them to watch for certain posters. When I download headers, all the files for the posters I watch for go into a "watch list" I can load like a group. This is in the current beta too. Then I never have to load the actual group and wade through headers. The posts from the posters I like all end up on my watch lists.
There's currently no way to control storage age "per group". I can think about it though.
