Things always change - sometimes one pipe gets more or less attention than another. I think for the most part passworded posts are not a generally accepted solution to the issue - they're still seen by most people as spammers trying to get you to go to a web site and scam your personal information. As with everything from booze during prohibition to weed in the 90s, all the heavy handed enforcement does is drive things underground. The obfuscated posts (subjects look like gibberish) seem to be a more popular option. You typically need to sign up with someone to find/decode the subjects. These are typically closed but open occasionally, you just need to keep snooping around (not here - this site doesn't discuss content in any fashion). I don't see usenet binaries dying yet, it's just slightly more subdued and not as brazen.
